Braze Content Cards guide: use personalized, persistent content feeds for onboarding, discovery, promotions and retention.

Content Cards are useful when customers benefit from a persistent content surface rather than a one-time interruption. They can support onboarding checklists, recommendations, promotions, account notices and content discovery inside an app or website.

Guide

Braze Content Cards Guide implementation framework.

Braze Content Cards guide covering in-app feeds, web experiences, personalization, scheduling, analytics and QA.

Why it matters

The strongest Content Cards programs treat the feed as a product surface. Define card taxonomy, priority, eligibility, expiry, deep links and analytics before adding volume.

Feed strategy

Design the feed around customer tasks, not an unstructured stream of campaigns.

Personalization

Use profile, behavior and lifecycle context to make each card relevant.

Product and UX governance

Coordinate card design with app/web teams so the experience feels native.

Measurement

Tie card engagement to downstream business outcomes, not only impressions.

Engineering deep dive

Design the implementation before the campaign.

Use this architecture layer to turn the capability into a measurable, maintainable Braze program.

Treat the feed as a product surface

Content Cards work best when customers can return to useful information over time. Design a taxonomy for onboarding tasks, recommendations, promotions, education, service notices or account actions. Define priority and expiration before adding campaigns so the feed does not become a pile of unrelated messages.

Implementation note: A feed should answer a customer need: what should I do next, what is relevant now, or what did I miss—not simply provide another stream of promotions.

Eligibility and personalization

Use behavioral state, profile attributes, lifecycle stage and product context to decide card eligibility. Keep the business rule separate from presentation so the same eligibility model can support multiple card variants. If an item has a destination, store or derive the deep link carefully and test the destination for every platform.

Implementation note: Document which fields determine eligibility and which fields only change creative; this makes debugging much faster when a card appears unexpectedly.

Web and app delivery considerations

Braze documents Content Cards for SDK-based experiences and notes that browser privacy tools can interfere with Web SDK delivery. Treat network availability and client version as part of QA rather than assuming every customer sees the feed identically.

Implementation note: For critical product notices, use a channel and delivery pattern designed for the required urgency instead of depending on a persistent feed alone.

Measure business outcomes

Track card impressions and interaction, but connect those events to a downstream action: activation, purchase, feature adoption, retention or service resolution. Compare feed engagement with alternative channels and monitor stale or ignored cards so the surface remains useful.

Implementation note: A successful Content Cards program is often defined by fewer, better cards rather than a larger message inventory.

Production scenario: onboarding checklist

A mobile app can use Content Cards for a five-step onboarding checklist. Eligibility changes after each completion event, card ordering follows the customer’s next best task, and each card deep-links to the exact product surface. QA covers fresh installs, partial completion, offline sessions, expired cards and customers who finish onboarding through another channel.

Advanced implementation notes

Decisions that make Content Cards production-ready.

Content Cards are most effective when they fill a persistent information need inside the customer experience. Treat the surface as a product component with its own content hierarchy, eligibility, freshness and measurement.

Design for persistence

Use the surface for information that benefits from staying available—onboarding tasks, recommendations, account reminders or educational content—rather than duplicating every time-sensitive notification.

Define card eligibility

Make audience rules and card priorities explicit. Document which cards should coexist, when a card should expire and how competing content is resolved.

Plan the destination

Every card needs a destination that matches the promise made in the creative. Test deep links, web fallbacks and signed-in versus signed-out states when the destination depends on customer identity.

Measure the whole interaction

Look beyond impressions. Track opens, downstream actions and eventual outcomes while checking whether cards reduce the need for repetitive outbound messages.

Production scenario

A fintech app uses Content Cards for personalized onboarding tasks. The team limits the number of simultaneous cards, expires completed tasks and measures card interaction alongside account activation rather than optimizing only for clicks.

Production checklist

What to validate before launch.

Use these controls as a release gate rather than a generic checklist.

  • Design a card taxonomy and naming standard.
  • Use audience and event data to determine eligibility and timing.
  • Define expiry and priority rules so the feed stays useful.
  • Deep-link cards to the exact destination required by the use case.
  • Measure impressions, clicks, dismissals and downstream conversion.
