Braze Catalogs guide: structure product and object data for reusable personalization across Braze campaigns and Canvases.

Catalogs are most valuable when product or object data changes independently of campaign logic. Instead of hard-coding product details into messages, teams can centralize fields such as price, category, inventory, image URL, loyalty status or recommendation metadata and reuse them across journeys.

Braze Catalogs guide for product data, dynamic attributes, recommendations, commerce use cases and campaign personalization.

Why it matters

A production catalog design starts with the object model. Decide which fields belong in the catalog, how updates arrive, how missing products are handled, and which experiences should consume the data.

Catalog architecture

Model the object once and reuse it across campaigns, Canvases and personalized content.

Commerce personalization

Use catalog data for product discovery, browse recovery, cross-sell and loyalty experiences.

Data freshness

Align catalog refresh cadence with the business value of fresh inventory, price and availability.

QA

Test missing images, prices, currencies, discontinued products and edge-case identifiers.

Engineering deep dive

Design the implementation before the campaign.

Use this architecture layer to turn the capability into a measurable, maintainable Braze program.

Model objects for reuse

A catalog is most valuable when one object model serves many journeys. Define a stable identifier, required fields, optional fields and ownership before importing data. Product name, price, image, category, inventory status and recommendation metadata should have predictable semantics.

Implementation note: Do not copy campaign-specific flags into the catalog when they can be derived or represented as audience logic.

Keep freshness aligned to the use case

Different experiences need different freshness. Price and inventory can be sensitive, while a category label may change less often. Braze documents a Shopify product sync that can update catalogs as store data changes, including additional commerce fields.

Implementation note: Choose the refresh pattern based on business risk and customer expectation, not simply because the fastest refresh is available.

Design for missing and stale objects

Every personalized template needs a fallback. Test missing image, removed item, empty field, unexpected currency, unavailable product and identifier mismatch. A catalog lookup should fail safely without turning a message into broken markup.

Implementation note: Build a fallback hierarchy such as recommended item → popular item → category-level content → generic creative.

Use catalogs with decisioning

Catalogs provide object context; segmentation, recommendations and journey logic decide which object to show and when. Keep those responsibilities separate so the same catalog can support multiple strategies.

Implementation note: When an external service already owns complex product logic, integrate the identifiers and keep the heavier ranking outside the message-render path.

Production scenario: flash-sale inventory

A retailer syncs product data into Braze and sends a promotion based on browsing behavior. The campaign renders the latest eligible product fields, but the template also has a fallback for products that are no longer available. QA covers price changes, missing images, multi-currency values and discontinued SKUs before the promotion is scaled.

Advanced implementation notes

Decisions that make Catalogs production-ready.

Catalogs create a reusable object layer for product and non-user data. The strongest designs separate durable object fields from campaign logic so the same data model can support multiple journeys.

Choose stable object keys

Use a predictable product or object identifier that remains consistent across source systems, catalog updates and downstream analytics. Document how legacy identifiers are handled during migrations.

Separate source data from presentation logic

Keep canonical fields such as name, URL, image, category, price or availability distinct from campaign-specific decisions. This makes the object model reusable and easier to QA.

Design failure states

A missing image, removed SKU, unexpected currency or empty recommendation should never create broken customer-facing content. Define fallback content and eligibility rules before the first dynamic template goes live.

Pair objects with customer context

Catalog data provides what can be shown; customer behavior and lifecycle state determine what should be shown. Connect the two through explicit eligibility logic and measurable journey steps.

Production scenario

A marketplace uses a product catalog for browse recovery. Before launch, the team tests price changes, discontinued items, category filtering, multi-region URLs and a generic fallback so a stale object cannot break the message.

Production checklist

What to validate before launch.

Use these controls as a release gate rather than a generic checklist.

  • Define a stable object identifier and naming convention.
  • Separate durable product attributes from transient campaign calculations.
  • Plan update frequency and ownership with the source commerce or product system.
  • Design fallbacks for missing, unavailable or discontinued objects.
  • Test rendering across email, in-app, Content Cards and other supported surfaces.
