Braze attribution and deep linking guide: connect campaign engagement to the right app, web or content destination and measure the outcome.

Attribution is only useful when the destination experience matches the campaign promise. Deep links should route customers to the relevant product, screen or action while preserving the context needed for measurement.

Guide

Braze Attribution & Deep Linking Guide implementation framework.

Braze attribution and deep linking guide for campaign measurement, mobile routing, deferred deep links and lifecycle journeys.

Why it matters

Design the link architecture alongside the campaign, not after it. Define fallback behavior for users without the app, expired links and unsupported destinations.

Link architecture

Use consistent naming and destination rules across channels.

Deferred deep linking

Plan the path for users who do not yet have the app installed.

Measurement

Connect campaign identifiers with downstream product events.

QA

Test valid, expired, fallback and cross-device scenarios.

Engineering deep dive

Design the implementation before the campaign.

Use this architecture layer to turn the capability into a measurable, maintainable Braze program.

Design the destination before the campaign

A link should identify the exact customer action, not merely open the app. Define the destination contract, required parameters, authenticated and unauthenticated behavior, fallback web URL, and ownership between CRM and mobile/web teams.

Implementation note: Use a small set of stable destination patterns rather than letting every campaign invent its own parameter names.

Separate routing from attribution

Deep linking answers where the customer should go; attribution answers how you evaluate the source of the visit or conversion. Keep these concepts distinct so a routing change does not silently invalidate reporting.

Implementation note: Document campaign parameters, redirect behavior and analytics events together, and test both the customer experience and the reporting trail.

Handle deferred or missing destinations safely

A customer may click before the app is installed, on an older app version, or from a device that cannot handle the intended route. Provide a safe fallback and verify that tracking survives the fallback path where appropriate.

Implementation note: Do not assume every destination exists forever; add versioning and ownership for high-value deep-link paths.

QA the full path

Test click, redirect, app/web open, authentication, content load and downstream conversion. Repeat across device families and app versions that your audience materially uses.

Implementation note: Treat every new deep-link pattern as a release artifact with sample URLs and expected results, not just a campaign setting.

Production scenario: mobile promotion

A push message links to a specific product. An installed-app user lands directly on the product detail page; an unauthenticated user is asked to sign in and then resumes the intended destination; a device without the required app version reaches a web fallback. Analytics records the campaign source separately from the routing decision.

Advanced implementation notes

Decisions that make Attribution & deep linking production-ready.

Attribution and deep linking connect acquisition or campaign activity to the destination experience. The implementation should make routing, fallback behavior and measurement consistent across mobile, web and campaign types.

Define destination contracts

Document the intended destination for every campaign class: app screen, web page, product detail or recovery state. Keep a fallback URL and a clear owner for expired or unsupported destinations.

Separate routing from measurement

A deep link should take the customer to the right experience even when an attribution parameter is missing. Keep tracking identifiers structured so analytics can attribute the visit without making the destination fragile.

Test installed and uninstalled states

Mobile flows need tests for an installed app, a fresh install, a returning user and unsupported OS or browser conditions. Deferred routing should preserve the campaign promise after installation where the stack supports it.

Reconcile campaign and outcome data

Compare click, open, landing and conversion events across Braze and the analytics layer. Look for duplicate conversions, lost campaign context and channel-specific discrepancies before optimizing spend or journey logic.

Production scenario

A commerce journey links a browse-recovery message to a product detail page. QA covers an existing app session, a first-time visitor, an expired product and a fallback web destination while analytics verifies that the downstream purchase retains campaign context.

Production checklist

What to validate before launch.

Use these controls as a release gate rather than a generic checklist.

  • Map campaign links to stable destination identifiers.
  • Define app-installed and app-not-installed behavior.
  • Preserve campaign and attribution context where appropriate.
  • Test links across devices and app versions.
  • Connect click and destination events to conversion reporting.
